How Dermetry works
A plain-language walkthrough of what a scan measures, where the processing happens, and exactly where the limits are. Last updated July 2026.
What does a Dermetry scan measure?
A scan rates a set of visible skin attributes, including clarity, texture, pores, redness, and tone evenness. Each attribute gets a score on a consistent scale, shown as rating bars. The individual scores combine into one overall number, the Glow Score, which is the easiest thing to track over time.
Where does the processing happen?
On your device. The computer vision engine ships to your browser or phone and analyzes the camera frame locally. Your photo is not uploaded to run a scan, which is why results come back in seconds and why the default answer to "where did my photo go" is: nowhere.
If we ever offer optional features that need an upload, each one gets its own separate opt-in that names exactly what is stored, for what purpose, and how to delete it. No silent collection, ever.
Is the scoring consistent?
The same photo always produces the same scores. Between two different photos, lighting and angle matter, the same way they do in any photograph of skin. Dermetry handles this in two ways: capture guidance that steers you toward steady, even light, and an emphasis on trends across multiple scans rather than any single number. A three-point change on one scan is noise. A steady twelve-point climb across a month of scans is your routine working.
How is the engine built?
The current engine is a calibrated computer vision system built on face parsing and attribute analysis, tuned to score consistently across skin tones. It is already running inside live partner stores. A trained model upgrade is on the roadmap, and when it ships, every score will carry a model version so results stay comparable over time.
What will Dermetry not tell you?
Dermetry will not diagnose anything. It does not detect skin cancer, infections, or any medical condition, and it will never pretend to. It measures the visible properties of your skin and offers guidance on routines and products. If something on your skin worries you, that is a question for a dermatologist, and the app will say exactly that.
What happens to my data?
Scans run on device and are not stored by Dermetry unless you explicitly opt in. The waitlist form collects your email address and nothing else. The full details live in our privacy policy.
Your photo stays on your device. Your scores are consistent and trackable. The advice is guidance, not diagnosis. Anything we add later that touches your data gets its own explicit opt-in.
